Come visit the Webb Telescope on Second Life!
Second Life (secondlife.com) is an online virtual world that is gaining popularity as an education and outreach tool. NASA has two “islands” within Second Life - the NASA Co-Lab and Explorer Island. Working with a team at JPL, we are developing a presence for the Webb Telescope on Explorer Island.
An interactive model of Webb was built by a Second Life resident and NASA fan, Jimbo Perhaps, using only the resources available on our public website. The satellite is shown sitting on a tennis court to demonstrate the size of its sunshield. We also have several display boards, the content of which can be easily changed to create a virtual exhibit. We will be adding to this exhibit in the coming months and creating engagement opportunities for the public. Please come visit us!
We gratefully acknowledge the help and encouragement received for this endeavor from Charles White, Charles Du, and Jeanne Holm at JPL.
Dr. John Mather, Nobel Laureate and Webb project scientist, gave a lecture in Second Life on December 15, 2009.
